Objectives

Demonstrate ability to access and utilise the library catalogue to retrieve information from electronic and paperbased resources; conduct literature searches demonstrating proficiency in using electronic databases and the world wide web; word process clear, literate and relevant prose demonstrating an ability to develop logical and consistent arguments related to a specific subject area; appreciate different sources of knowledge and the relationship of research evidence to the practice setting; summarise the basic differences between qualitative and quantitative research traditions; conduct and write up a brief report of the literature in a specified area of healthcare research

Syllabus

Health and safety requirements, associated with the use of VDU's and PC's; information sources, access and retrieval; library resources: catalogue, electronic and WWW services and resources. Searching and using the catalogue. Accessing related web sites. Using bulletin boards, book marks and downloading information. Using student e-mail; literature searching: using CD-ROM, electronic databases, ASSIA, CINAHL, MEDLINE, BIDS, the Cochrane databases. Exercises using the Nathan Bodington Building; word processing reports and reviews; the nature of knowledge and sources of knowledge for research and health and social care; the qualitative and quantitative research traditions - history and philosophy; literature review: reading the literature critically. Approaches to structure and criteria for the review. Report writing.
